There are said to be three components that distinguish a particular perfume from other perfumes, and are called fragrance notes. The first is called the top note, which is like the façade of a building, because it introduces the perfume making it the kind of scent to be perceived first. The second is known as the middle note, which is the scent that lingers on after the first note dissipates. It is also known as the heart note. The last note, known as the base note is the scent that is perceived after the middle note slowly disappears. These notes are said to be the harmonious chord that makes up a scent.
